Final Idea

After loking back over my concepts and my research findings I think that the concept that I am going to take further is the one with the door as I feel that this could have the potential to be a very clever product with regards to its space saving element and if I could incorporate some of the other elements I've looked in to also this would make it even better as by having a combination of all three would make it a solid product. My calculations are as below.

Concept Development

Above are some of my concept development which have taken into consideration the different elements that I wanted to look at. There are concepts that are modular, ones that use up wasted or dead space, and ones that are expandable. I think some of these ideas are quite viable with regards to possibly taking further. I am also looking in to the concept of using the door and am in the process of sketching some ideas with regards to this.

The Humble Door

The door to most people is a means of passage from one space/room to another, but to me I feel that it is a product that is seriously under-rated and under used within the household environment, other than for hanging jackets and clothes off of the back of as well as its primary function being opened and closed. This object could therefore provide the answer to what I have been looking for with regards to a space saving element. Thereore I think that this area in and around the door is not utilised and therefore its potential overlooked. And everyone has one in their household so it is the perfect solution to my problem.

Foldability

While looking in to modular systems I was still keeping the storage space issue in my head and thought about foldability of the product and how great it would be if the product could fold away flat when not in use. This brought me to looking at origami and then led me to the Joseph and joseph collinder. I came across this product on one of the design blogs and thought that it was quite a clever product with regards to how it sored away flat when not in use and also how it folded up and fixed in to place with no external or added fixings. It is also a good use of material as you are creating less waste when you are using only the one material and also only one piece to create the object. I may keep this in mind when thinking about concpet development.

Existing Products

As you can see from the images aove modular products have already been thought of when it comes to recycling and space saving. But this won't stop me! I'll still churn out some ideas on this topic as I think it could be a valuable area to look at.

Modulaity

In my concept stages I have come to the point where I feel like I have had a mini break through so to say, and have taken it upon myself to choose on subject area instead of looking at a bit of everything. So I have decided to look at modularity and how modular designs could work better in he spaces that are unused wihin the rooms in the house i've mentioned before, such as the kitchen and utility room. A modular system would also work better in smalle or limited spaces which is good for what I am thinking as I dont want my product to take up much valuable space. I also like this concept of modularity as it essentailly allows the user to have full cutomisation over how much they recycle and what they recycle, therefore creating a product that could take on many different forms depending on the users preferences.
